RTT for PMDD & Severe PMS

PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) and Severe PMS can be extremely distressing for those that suffer from their debilitating effects which can include fatigue, low mood, anger and irritability, depression, anxiety and mood swings.

Traditional treatments have focused on medical and lifestyle interventions, but with strong evidence to suggest that childhood trauma plays a part in PMDD hypnotherapy and other trauma-informed therapeutic interventions are offering long-term hope to sufferers.

Since PMDD is often a complex condition with multiple symptoms, a multifaceted approach combining RTT, mindset, coaching and lifestyle changes is most-effective and in most cases, the results can be life-changing.

PMDD and its symptoms

PMDD is a recognised disorder which affects 1 in 20 women. The symptoms can be overwhelming and extreme. The symptoms prevail for 1-3 weeks of the month, and it can feel like you’ve been possessed. This plays out in damaging outbursts, leading to negative self-talk and feelings of extreme guilt and remorse, which ultimately lead to the feeling of “everyone would be better off without me”.

  • Anger or irritability.
  • Feeling on edge, overwhelmed or tense.
  • Anxiety and panic attacks.
  • Depression and suicidal thoughts.
  • Difficulty concentrating.
  • Fatigue and low energy.
  • Food cravings, binge eating or changes in appetite.
  • Headaches.
  • Insomnia.
  • Mood swings.

PMDD symptoms usually appear a week or two before your period starts and dissipate two to three days after your period ends. It's estimated that around 25% of those affected attempt suicide.

 

PMDD & Childhood Trauma

Research published in the National Library of Medicine showed that Eighty-three percent of women with PMDD had experienced early life trauma. Without intervention, childhood trauma has the ability to impact our behaviours, thoughts and stress responses into adulthood.

The link between PMDD & past trauma

Here is what happens at a physiological level in the last half of your cycle that makes you so vulnerable to the pain of your past:

During the luteal phase oestrogen levels drop.

Oestrogen is known to increase the production of serotonin (your feel-good hormone), dopamine (your motivation hero), epinephrine and norepinephrine (your stress-managing hormones) and Beta-endorphins (your natural morphines). So, when oestrogen drops, all those neuropeptide levels drop with it… This explains the low mood, low motivation and low tolerance at this time of the month.

The sudden drop in oestrogen leads to progesterone dominance. Progesterone is responsible for calming down your brain chatter. Nature is designed this way to actually give you access to introspection and thus clarity…

This phase of your cycle could actually be a blessing, a gift… and once you heal you can see it as a little window that opens up every month for you to shift your focus inward, peek into your intuitive wisdom and grow.

 

Now, you don’t have to imagine what it must be like each month, when this time of inward focus comes, and you are cyclically forced to come face-to-face with unresolved past trauma… A living nightmare, right!?

 

The luteal phase also initiates an evaluation mode that makes you wonder: What did I achieve so far? What needs to change in my life? What aspects of my work/relationship/social life aren’t working for me?

When you have past trauma, your malignant beliefs create havoc with your evaluation mode. Beliefs from your past to the effect of “I don’t matter, my feelings don’t matter, what I want doesn’t matter… I’m not enough” are the software for your thoughts, feelings and behaviour.

This window of inward focus gives you access to those internal conflicts at a subconscious level still in need of resolution.

How unresolved trauma could hold the key to healing PMDD

Trauma causes us to abandon ourselves at a subconscious level, in the form of negative beliefs, stories we told ourselves in a moment of cognitive dissonance. We often think of self-abandonment as lack of self-love and low self-esteem.

This is not the only way we abandon ourselves. In childhood it is very easy to stop trusting ourselves in seemingly innocuous events. One client of mine in regression told me “I’m 5 years old. I’m cleaning the windows for my mum with kitchen roll and water, feeling helpful. Mum comes in and starts shouting at me for the mess I’ve made of the windows she’d just had cleaned. I’m confused because I thought I was doing a good thing but now I feel bad. I feel rejected and unloveable. I must never trust myself again!”  And there you have it, a glitch in the belief system “It’s not safe to trust myself.”

When we stop trusting ourselves, we stop trusting our intuition, we shut ourselves off from source, we stop following guidance, we have difficulty making decisions, we ignore our needs, we second guess ourselves and think others know best, we stop following our hearts, we block ourselves from bringing our ideas to fruition, we struggle to find our soul-purpose, we surrender our power and ignore our wisdom.

Unresolved trauma causes you to stop trusting your intuition; yet your soul deeply yearns to live in flow.

I see premenstrual disorders as a calling, a calling to heal and reprogram yourself so that you can step up and embody the version of you that lives the fulfilled, self-validating life that is meant for you.

The debris that surface during this time of the month are but signs and warnings… your subconscious is sending you messages; trying to draw your attention towards the mutations in your belief system that need resolving. Ignoring the messages will only make the warnings louder and stronger.

Silencing the messages with medication is like shooting the messenger. The debris will still be there, but instead of rising to the surface, you are sending them inward to wreak havoc not only on your emotions but also your physiology.

Once we resolve the trauma and learn and learn the tools for self-mastery, you open up a whole new world to yourself where anything is possible.

I specialise in healing trauma, depression and psychosomatic disorders at the subconscious root cause.  After spending my early adulthood battling clinical depression and chronic illness, I went looking for a solution studying medicine at the internationally renowned University of Pécs Medical School and going on to finish my studies in Dental Medicine at University of the Basque Country, Spain.

I’m so thankful to have found and worked with Chloe. I was desperate to heal my PMDD last October, and I would have done anything to get better. Healing Psychotic Depression and cPTSD

I have been struggling for as long as I can remember with unresolved childhood trauma.
